I’ve never had good skin, but after pregnancy, my skin really turned on me. I’ve tried basically everything under the sun – over the counter, prescription and have even gone as far as taking antibiotics, with no real results. Since pharmaceuticals haven’t proven to be effective, I decided to turn to a more natural route.
I started reading up on the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar after Jenn posted her ACV Mocktails, and I figured aside from the smell, adding some ACV into my life can’t hurt. Every morning I mix a teaspoon of vinegar with a mixture of half apple juice and half water. The first few days, I had to plug my nose to get it down, but so far so good.
Other than drinking ACV, I’ve started using it directly on my skin as a toner. I’ve also decided to give up on soap and all other commercial facial cleansers. Instead, I am using honey, oatmeal, baking soda and coconut oil as my skin cleansing routine. I make a face wash of honey and ground oats (which I grind in the blender) to wash my face every night and moisturize with coconut oil. A couple times a week I use baking soda in place of the oats to make a more abrasive scrub.
If you don’t want to give up your skin care routine, but want to incorporate some of these natural ingredients, you can also try different combos to make face masks. Mix honey, oats and some water into a thick consistency and slather onto a freshly cleaned face. Keep on for around 20 minutes. You can also make a baking soda mask, which is very effective for acne, by mixing baking soda and water in a 2:1 ratio. There are tons of variations on natural face masks, some even use yogurt, so you can put that Cho to good use! ๐
Now you might be wondering, why these things?
Apple Cider Vinegar is plain and simply good for you. Aside from giving you cleaner, healthier skin, ACV supports a healthy immune system, promotes digestion and ph balance and can even help with muscle soreness and sore throats.
Honey is a natural antiseptic which prevents bacteria from growing on you face. It also aids in the healing of wounds and is a natural moisturizer.
Baking soda is a physical exfoliant, which makes it highly effective at removing the dead skin cells without causing excessive irritation. It is also a neutralizer, which can neutralized acids and bases which your skin comes in contact with.
Oatmeal treats three of the conditions that contribute to acne – excessively oily skin, harmful bacteria on the surface of the skin and an excess of dead skin cells. Oats absorb and remove excess oil, remove bacteria and exfoliate dead skin cells.
Coconut oil l is a source of two of the most powerful anti microbial agents found in food –ย Capric Acid and Lauric Acid, the same acids found in breast milk to protect babies from infection. It is also full of Vitamin E ,which ensures proper functioning of sebum glands and clears blockages, treating the cause of acne.

I’ve only been using these ingredients for about a week, and haven’t gotten any new breakouts. So far, so good. Hopefully these things will prove to be effective so I can do a before and after post. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I have also started using oats and baking soda to wash and coconut oil to moisturise. My skin is going through a cleansing crisis but nothing major. One huge whitehead and small whiteheads and just red patches (dry skin) which the coconut oil has helped lessoned.
How’s your experience so far? Still using them? Any updates?

The way you wrote the article makes it sound like you’ve been doing this for long enough to be credible and believable. What a shock to read at the end that you’ve only been doing it for a WEEK! You state ” A couple times a week I use baking soda in place of the oats to make a more abrasive scrub.” I’m sure you meant to say ” A couple times IN THE PAST WEEK I HAVE USED baking soda…”
I would never make a skincare recommendation that i wasn’t personally using for at least 3-6 months. You have to go through a couple period cycles and seasons to be sure of your body’s reaction, don’t you think?
So this article was written about 3 months ago. Are you still following this routine and how’s it working for you?
xsylvia1234 says
Sorry if I made it seem that way, but I have just posted an update, which I\’ve been meaning to do for a few weeks now. I am still following the regimen and I am happy with the results. I do agree that I may have been premature with my post, but in my defense I was excited to see my skin responding to the products, even after a few days, when I usually wake up redness and flakes. I also did a good deal of research before trying the stuff myself, and everything I read about the regimen was positive, so I had high hopes for myself. I apologize if you found the post misleading, that wasn\’t my intention, but if you\’re still looking for a new skincare routine, I do wholeheartedly recommend this three months later!

I found this on Pinterest and have been using it for about a week. However I don’t think I’m using the proper measurements when it comes to making the face wash. To make a fair amount supply how much oats, honey, and baking soda do I put in a container?! Please help!
xsylvia1234 says
I just kind of wing it every night. I grind enough oats to keep in a small tupperware and squeeze some honey in my hand and mix in the oats or baking soda with it. I haven\’t made a supply of the products mixed together because I\’m not sure of how long they would keep for being mixed together. Good luck!

I have seen this concoction on another website and that article says not to use anything else other than these ingredients not sure I can go without moisturizer/sun screen. what is your routine like? moisturizer or no moisturizer?
xsylvia1234 says
I use a BB cream from Boscia which has SPF 27, and gives me a bit of coverage to even out skin tone. At night, I only use coconut oil. I feel that you should do what works for you. I wouldn\’t use the coconut oil under makeup though, because it would shine right through. Good luck!

I’m spending a ton of time cleansing and exfoliating our face, our body too needs the same kind of pampering. I’m using sea salt which gives an exfoliate skin as its small granules gently remove the dead skin cells from the body and make my skin smooth. I’m also using honey to moisturize my skin and you will try this and you will be amazed in the results.

Thank you for sharing your journey towards natural skincare! It’s inspiring to hear how you’ve embraced a more holistic approach, incorporating Apple Cider Vinegar into your daily routine and opting for natural ingredients like honey, oatmeal, baking soda, and coconut oil. It’s commendable that you’ve found alternatives that work for you, especially after trying various pharmaceutical options without success.
