Sometimes I wish that I could go back to being a kid. Everything was much easier and could usually be fixed with a colorful band-aid or a popsicle. The world was simply a different place. Children did not have to worry about losing their lives by attending a sporting event, by standing at a finish line to cheer on their parent/friend/family member. When I heard about the Boston Marathon bombing, the first thoughts that went through my head were that if that had been a run that I was doing, Tommy and Alex would have been at that finish line waiting for me, like they always do. That finish line was packed with people who were there to support their loved ones, to see them cross the finish line after a grueling 26.2 miles. My heart breaks for everyone in Boston, for all the people who were affected by this senseless act of violence. I know that there is nothing that I can do or say to alleviate the pain that so many people are feeling today, but I will be wearing my race shirt to honor and to show that my heart is with all of you.
But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint. — Isaiah 40:31

It, too, makes me heavy-hearted when I think about the world children have to grow up in these days, compared to when I grew up. I have faith that one day, it’ll be a thing of the past that children and parents have to worry about their family’s safety in situations that shouldn’t be dangerous ones.

It makes me nauseous when I think of all the times my husband and kids waited for me at a finish line. Now I wonder, is it safe to have them there? Of course, I’ll never stop racing, but am I putting my family in a dangerous situation by wanting to see my smiling support system at the finish line?

It\’s a scary thought, but I also feel that no matter where we go, be it a race, a supermarket, a movie theater, we are never 100% safe these days. We can only live our lives and pray that we make it through each day safely, otherwise we would never leave our houses.
