Since Alex was baking in my belly, I knew I wanted him to be an active child. I knew I wanted him to play sports and have a love for exercise, without thinking of it as exercise. A few weeks ago while enjoying the McCarren Park Green Market, we stumbled upon a group of kids doing soccer drills. Alex watched them for a while and ran back to me and said “I wanna try!”
When we got home that evening, I googled the name that was on the coach’s shirt and found the Soccer Super Stars. I did a quick search of their schedule and found a new group starting the following week that fit our already full schedule perfectly.
The following week we headed down to Bushwick Inlet Park for our first soccer lesson. Our group only had four kids and was started by a fellow NYC blogger, Libby from Willy B Mum.
Our group ran for four weeks and Alex loved every minute of it. The skills they were learning were very basic and there was no real playing of soccer. They started and ended each class with a fun song of which body parts you can use to touch the ball in soccer, and of course Alex loved to scream “you never touch the ball with you hands!”
The class was loosely structured and their coach, who was also named Alex, just went with the flow. He set up drills for them to do, but also just let them run around and be silly at times. Every class ended with stickers which was probably the best part if you ask my little man.
Alex absolutely loved going to soccer and we can’t wait to get back in the spring!
Super Soccer Stars has groups all over New York, Boston, Miami and Los Angeles. If you have a little one who loves sports and staying active, I highly recommend it!
Did you play any sports as a kid?
