Alex has been obsessed with science experiments for as long as I can remember. We’ve been making bouncy eggs and ooblecks since he was two years old and he is mesmerized and constantly wants to learn and try new things. While I was at Blogger Bash last month, I had a chance to talk to the brand representative from Griddly Games about Alex’s obsession and he gave us this Just Add Milk Science + Art kit to try.
As soon as Alex laid his eyes on the box, he wanted to try it. We decided to try it two ways – once with 2% milk and once with almond milk to see if there was any difference.
I filled a takeout container lid with the 2% and Alex carefully dropped two drops of each color into the milk. After all the colors were added to the milk, he added a drop of dish soap and the magic happened.
He was so amazed by the swirling colors.
He added a few more drops of dish soap into the corners where the colors had pooled, for “maximum swirliness” before dipping the paper into the experiment to get the art part of the kit. He loved seeing the colors swirls on the paper, and even hung them up in his room after they dried.
We repeated the experiment with the almond milk and got similar results. The only differences that Alex picked up on was that the food coloring stayed brighter in the almond milk and it didn’t swirl as much when he added the liquid soap.
I explained to him that the reason the experiment works is because there is fat in the milk that is effected when the dish soap is added. Alex said since the almond milk didn’t swirl as much as the regular milk, it must have less fat in it.
We really enjoyed the Just Add Milk Science + Art Kit. It is a really fun way to get children interested in science, and the experiments are not complicated or time consuming. I also think that adding the art component to the kit was a great idea to get a wider range of children interested in trying it. Overall, it is a great product and Alex and I highly recommend it!
What’s the coolest science experiment you’ve ever done?

Aw man, why do all the cool things always have to come out when I’m not longer a kid? This would have been a lot of fun! I’m jealous. 😛
Maybe he’ll become a scientist when he grows up. Or an artist. o.o

When you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up he says police office, scientist or artist. Who knows?!
