Happy Memorial Day! I hope you are having a great first weekend of summer and enjoying this amazing weather. My weekend started out great at the Farmer’s Market. Tommy and I have been trying to get out butts there for weeks and we finally made it.

We strolled through the place and picked up lettuce, spinach, bok choy, heirloom tomatoes, beets, carrots and strawberries. We’ve eaten almost all of it already too. Nothing like fresh fruits and veggies!

After stocking up on produce, we headed over to the Williamsburg waterfront to wait for the Smorgasburg to open. It had been a while since we had been to the area and we were surprised to find that there was a whole new park built there, complete with amazing city views.

Munchkin had an awesome time climbing the rocks and looking for non-existent fish in the water. We did see ducks though!

Once Smorgasburg opened, we headed inside to see what deliciousness we could find for lunch. Smorgasburg happens every Saturday rain or shine from 11 AM to 6 PM and is a huge food festival where over 100 vendors come to set up shop and sell you their delicious food.

We did a loop around the whole place to see what was there before we made our decision on what to eat. We started out with Arnold Palmer Slushies from Kelvin Natural Slush Co.

Refreshing and delicious!

For our lunch, we chose different paths. Tommy went Greek and got a Spinach Pie from Anthi’s Greek Specialties.

I got a falafel, but not just your standard chickpea ball falafel. As soon as we walked in I saw Saucy By Nature, I knew  it was going to be my lunch.

I chose a whole Spiced Marrakech Falafel.

And I only have one word for it… AMAZING!

We were planning on getting dessert too, but we really did not have any room in our bellies for it. There’s always next time and we are already planning our next trip there!

How did you spend your holiday weekend?

One of the things I love about my job is the amount of time I get to spend outside the office. A few times a week, I take trips to various courts and to the Department of State. My favorite court to visit is Brooklyn Supreme, not only because all the people who work there are super helpful, but there is a Farmer’s Market in front of the court steps a few times a week.

After I was done at court yesterday, I took a walk through the market to grab something quick for lunch before heading into the city. This little booth caught my eye.

Body & Soul is an organic, vegan bakery that pops up in booths at Farmer’s Markets around the city. After perusing gawking at the yummy treats their selection, I decided to take the savory route and get  a Farro & Black Bean Chili Turnover.

Since I was eating on the go, I didn’t have a chance to heat it up, but it was delicious nonetheless. It had just the right amount of spice to give a bit of a kick, without setting your mouth on fire. The crust was kind of dense, but I guess that’s expected from a vegan dough.

I also bought a some apple cider to go along with my turnover. Apple Cider is one of my favorite drinks in the world, especially in the fall! Yummy!

Since no good lunch is complete without dessert, I hit up Red Mango on my way back to the office. To my delight, they had a new flavor – none other than my favorite flavor ever – Cake Batter!

I topped off my fro yo with some rainbow sprinkles, cookie dough bites and strawberries.

The perfect end to a great lunch!

A busy weekend + the Superbowl on Sunday night = no post on Monday. For once, I did homework instead of something fun, so be proud of me! The weekend flew by super quickly and I feel like I got no time to relax and sleep in, but there’s always next weekend!

On Friday, we decided to go out for dinner. Tommy and I had both been craving sushi for weeks, so it was time to give into the craving and get our sushi on. Instead of going to our usual sushi place, we decided to use a Groupon that we had purchased a few weeks ago and try out Arirang. We have been to Arirang in PA before and love it, so when I saw a Groupon for their location in Brooklyn, I jumped on it. We started dinner by sharing two rolls. We got the Angelkiss and Southwestern Rolls. I really like the Southwestern roll because it fused Japanese and Mexican food, two of my favs, into a sushi roll.

For my entree, I got the seafood teriyaki, which I shared with Munchkin. He was all over the salmon teriyaki, I was really surprised.

Arirang Hibachi Steakhouse on Urbanspoon

Overall, I enjoyed our dinner, but the Arirang in Langhorne is definitely better than the Brooklyn location. The Brooklyn location is definitely older than the one in PA, so it’s not as modern looking, but I feel like the food and service was better in PA, as well.

On Sautrday, I had to wake up early to go to school, which gets a big thumbs down. But, I have an awesome boyfriend who woke up early so he could drive me to school – big thumbs up. We also stopped at the farmer’s market on our way to school, which gets a double thumbs up. We didn’t really get much, because it’s winter and slim pickings at the Farmer’s Market, but I did manage to grab a muffin and coffee milk for breakfast.

Another good part about Saturday school is the hour lunch break which gave me tons of time to walk over to Whole Foods! I got a bunch of different random things from their hot and salad bars. It was super yummy, but the price is what stops me from eating at Whole Foods more often.

On Saturday night, we went out with some friends to celebrate. We went to the Radegast Biergarden, for what else but beer!

After all the beer, we decided to eat some late night Mexican, but after a few beers, taking pictures went out the window!

Even though we were out pretty late, I was up bright and early thanks to the Munchkin. I can’t complain though because Tommy was up at 5:30 after 3 hours of sleep to go skiing. We had a family din din because it was my aunt’s last weekend in the States. She is going back to Poland after being here for a few months and I get to drive her to the airport on Friday. I love the airport!

On Sunday night, we all settled in front of the TV to watch the Superbowl! I’m not a huge football fan, but how can you not watch when your city’s team is playing. The game was close the whole time, which made it really exciting. I’m really happy the Giants won, and so were the people on by block who set of fireworks and honked their car like crazies after the game. I’m pretty sure New Yorkers are born with a hate for all teams from Boston, which makes the Giants victory a little sweeter.

Monday consisted of zero excitement. Work to school to home to sleep. Here’s to hoping that Tuesday will bring a bit more excitement!

What did you do this weekend? Are you a football fan?

Why do the weekends fly by so quickly? Luckily I only have two days of school this week, so I will soon be enjoying a 5 day weekend.

Friday started off with a trip to the supermarket where I made an incredible discovery. I was looking for Pumpkin Spice waffles when I ran into these bad boys.

With the Pumpkin Spice bagels in my cart, I walked over to the dairy section of the supermarket hoping to find cinnamon cream cheese, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t exist.  So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. In the spice aisle I found a cinnamon sugar grinder and I knew this would make my bagels amazing.

When I got home, I toasted up a bagel, spread on some cream cheese and topped it off with some cinnamon sugar.  It tasted amazing! If you can find these bagels in your supermarket I highly recommend em!

I also took my first stab at Spaghetti Squash on Friday and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I made it with a pesto Parmesan sauce. Recipe will follow soon.

Pun intended 😉

Even though the weathermen kept yelling about how the weekend was going to be a washout, that didn’t happen. We woke up on Saturday morning and headed over to the farm stand for some fresh produce.

Munchkin had a ball checking out the pumpkins.

Munchkin and I spent most of Saturday outside playing on our swing set. His favorite part is the steering wheel, he could play with the thing for hours on end.

I also nearly had a heart attack when I found a salamander slithering up my leg.  Even though they are virtually harmless, looking down and finding a lizard on my leg was not a pleasant experience.

After working up an appetite outdoors, we enjoyed some of the fresh fruit we got at the farm stand.

After Munchkin was fast asleep, Tommy and I headed out for a night on the town.  Unfortunately, the towns in the Poconos are lacking in the night life department so we ended up at the bowling alley.  Neither of us had been bowling in years, but it was a lot of fun. The bowling alley does cosmic bowling at night, so the whole place was lit up in black lights.

We also made a bet that whoever lost would get dinner that night. So of course I had to lose.  Notice that I did get two strikes, but that wasn’t enough to win.

Since it was getting late, it was almost impossible to find a place that was open, but not fast food. Luckily, this place had crazy neon lights which we saw through the crazy fog.

Luna Rossa is a sit down restaurant, but by the time we got there only the bar section was open and we were limited to the bar menu, which included brick oven pizza.

We got two pizzas to share and enjoyed them along side some Yuengling. For a complete hole in the wall place in the middle of nowhere, the pizza was surprisingly good, and that’s coming from two native New Yorkers who know their pizza.

Sunday was spent relaxing around the house.  Munchkin decided to bake an imaginary cake.

Cake is Munchkin’s newest word and he points at the oven repeating cake.  Maybe I have a future baker on my hands?

I also finished up reading Room last night.  It is really an amazing story about a five year old boy and his mother who have been held captive since the mother was kidnapped at age 19.  I don’t want to give any of it away, but its one of those books you cannot put down.

Now I need to finish up my reading for school! Have a great Monday everyone!

What’s the last good book you’ve read?
Have you ever discovered a really good hole in the wall restaurant?

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a great weekend because I know I did!

We started the weekend very deliciously, with some sushi. It had been almost two weeks since we went out for sushi, which I’m pretty sure is some kind of record. Munchkin is liking sushi more and more as he gets older.  Its pretty funny to see a little guy in a highchair throwing back Alaska rolls.
On Saturday, we woke up in the Poconos and I was ready to get outdoors.  The weather was gorgeous with a slight chill in the air, the perfect weather to go check out the farm stand.

My eyes lit up when I saw all of the pumpkins, squash and gourds for sale already.  As much as I would love to buy them all and decorate already, I really want to go to a pumpkin patch and get the whole pumpkin picking experience.
I did purchase some spaghetti squash, which I will be attempting to make this week, for the first time.  Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t screw it up!
We also hit up the supermarket where Munchkin not only got a free cookies at the bakery, he also got a sticker at checkout.  He was one happy camper!
Saturday night was date night! We decided to go to the movies and ended up seeing Drive.  We were going to go to the movie theater that we went to last time, but its like a half hour drive away so instead we decided to go to the Poconos Movieplex.  It was seriously like the strangest movie theater we’d ever been to.  It looked like it was stuck in the 80s and it totally gave us strange vibes, kind of like in movies when outsiders come into the little town.
Luckily, the locals did not turn out to be zombies and we got out of there alive. The movie, however, was so weird.  It has really good reviews online, but both of us were just really confused throughout the movie. There were a lot of awkward pauses and the ending didn’t really make sense.  I don’t recommend it.
After the movies we hit up Red Robin..yum! I had a coupon for a free birthday burger, which you get if you sign up for their newsletter.  I had the Oktoberfest burger which was really good. Its had beer flavored mustard, Swiss cheese, onions and ham on a pretzel bun.  I’ve never had mustard on a burger before, but it definitely works and gives the burger a really yummy flavor.
On Sunday, we hit up the outlets to get some new pieces for our fall wardrobes.  I got my first plaid shirt at J Crew and I can’t wait to wear it.  I think it’ll look great with jeans and boots for fall. Munchkin got new fall sneakers and a raincoat with matching galoshes.
I fell in love with a winter coat for Munchkin, but they didn’t have his size in store.  Thanks to my online shopping skills, Munchkin’s coat will me arriving in 5 to 7 business days!
Now I need to catch up on some homework, I know you’re jealous.
Have a great Monday!
What did you do this weekend?
What’s your fall fashion must have?

This was probably one of the best weekends I’ve had in a while.  We got a lot done, saw a lot of people who we haven’t seen in a long time and had a great time doing it.

Friday

We started off Friday at the movies.  I read the book The Help last month and have been wanting to see the movie ever since.  It was really good, but I feel like they left out some good parts from the book, but I guess in the interest of time they had to because the movie was already over two hours long.  We were lucky enough to sit next to some older women at the theater who were either falling asleep and snoring loudly [no joke] or telling each other what would happen next.

Since the weather was gorgeous on Friday, we decided to head over to the piers after the movie.

We laid by the water and just enjoyed the gorgeous night. After that we decided to take a drive down Bedford Ave in Brooklyn where we encountered the Luke’s Lobster truck.  At first we were a little taken back about the thought of eating seafood out of a truck, but something in my head clicked and I remembered hearing about it on TV and we decided to give it a shot.

We got a lobster roll and a crab roll and shared.  They were both surprisingly really good, but we both agreed that the lobster roll was better.  The lobster was almost sweet and the sauce on it was really good. If you live in NY, you can follow the truck on twitter and know when it is in your area.

Saturday
On Saturday we woke up bright and early to go to the McCarren Park Farmer’s market.

We got a bunch of farm fresh veggies like kale, carrots, baby potatoes, tomatoes and zucchini.  We also got plums, peaches and nectarines.  We got some yummy fresh bread stuffed with spinach, garlic and mozzarella and foccacia.  Tommy also surprised me with some gorgeous flowers which are standing in front of me as I write this.  We also tries some yummy chocolate and coffee flavored milk from a local dairy farm.  It had been a while since we had been to a farmer’s market and we both decided that we have to make this a regular occurrence because we not only had a great time, we got a lot of great things for half the price of the supermarket.
I also had two parties to go to on Saturday.  First up was my cousin Kristina’s baby shower.  She is going to have a little baby girl and is due on September 20th.
It was nice to see all my cousins because we don’t see each other very often because they are all a bit older than me and we didn’t really hang out as kids.
After the baby shower, I had to rush home to get ready from my friend Lukasz’s wedding.  Since the wedding was out in Long Island, they hired a bus to take guests there and back after the wedding, so me and Tommy took advantage of it. The wedding was a Chateau Briand Caterers in Carle Place. We got there just in time for the cocktail hour which was held outdoors in a gorgeous loungy type area.

After the cocktail hour, we were all invited upstairs to greet the bride and groom and their wedding party.

I’m telling you, in you ever have the chance to go to a Polish wedding, jump on it.  We had a blast and danced our butts off big time.  I think we didn’t sit down for more than a song just to get a drink.  The music was great and everyone was having a really great time.  Congrats again to Lukasz and Mariola!

On the way home, the rains began.  Lukasz doesn’t live to far from our house, so we decided that we would walk home after the wedding.  Too bad that by the time we got off the bus it was pouring and got home without a dry thread on us.

Sunday

We woke up on Sunday to something that sounded like a huge explosion.  Then again, judging my Facebook and Twitter, most of our neighborhood woke up to the sound.  Lightening struck somewhere nearby because the whole house shook.  It was a foreshadowing to what the rest of the day would be like because it poured and poured and poured some more.  It was actually the rainiest day since the weather started being recorded like a 100 years ago.

Tommy and I had planned on making BBQ for dinner and we didn’t let a little lot of rain stop us. After some difficulties with the grill not lighting correctly, we were ready to feast.

We made chicken and Italian sausage with corn, red potatoes and a kale, mushroom salad I made.  We served it along a yummy garlic bread that Tommy made.

After dinner, we headed out to Ikea where Tommy and Munchkin got matching Poang chairs. Well not really matching because Tommy got his in black and the children’s version only comes in white.

This morning we woke up to even more rain and it doesn’t look like it will be going away anytime soon. Rain, rain go away little Munchkin wants to play!

What was the most exciting thing you did this weekend?
Do you frequent Farmer’s Markets?
Do you have your arc ready for the impending flood?
