I don’t know if its just me, but this month flew by. October is non-GMO month, and to help celebrate and spread awareness about GMOs and what they do to our bodies, Bestowed put out an October non-GMO box.

bestowed nongmo box

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, animals and plants that have had their DNA modified for various purposes, such as to withstand pesticides and insects or for a longer shelf life. While these may sound like benefits, the truth is that we don’t really know what these modified organisms do to our bodies and what effects they will have on us long-term. Many European nations have blocked the use of GMOs in their food products and don’t even allow import of food made in the USA without proper labeling stating that the foods contain GMOs. The scariest part is that 80% of conventional foods in the US now contain GMOs.

Everything in the box was GMO free and as always, delicious. This month’s box included:

  • Enjoy Life Seed and Fruit Mix (I am currently obsessed with this! I already bought a full size.)
  • FiberLove Cinnamon Raisin Bar
  • The Good Bean Smoky Chili & Lime Chickpea Snacks
  • Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 70 Protein Supplement
  • Nature’s Path Love Crunch Dark Chocolate Macaroon Granola (Tastes amazing with Coconut Chobani!)
  • Ultima Replenisher
  • Way Better Snacks Simply Beyond Black Bean Tortilla Chips
  • *BONUS *- A one-year subscription to Women’s Health magazine!

The flyer had descriptions for all of the items in the box, and all the items are available for purchase in full size on the Bestowed website. The flyer also had some info about what GMOs are, what foods usually contain GMOs and how to avoid them.  If you want to learn more about GMOs, check out the Bestowed blog for lots of good info!

I wasn’t the only one who was very excited for this month’s non-GMO Bestowed box. A certain set of sticky fingers got into the box right away and staked their claim on the Unreal Peanut Butter Cups. Luckily, he is good at sharing.

If you want to try Bestowed for yourself, head over to their website. A single box is $19 and an annual subscription is $209 for 12 boxes. If you want to get your hands on the non-GMO box, click this link to get it for just $10!

Do you pay attention to GMOs in the foods you eat? Which of this month’s products would you like to try?

I have a new obsession! After waiting weeks and weeks for it to arrive, my FitBit Flex made its way to my mailbox last Friday, and since then I have been obsessed with it and all of the cool features and logs I now have to scour over.

The FitBit Flex is a little tracker that you wear in a band on your wrist. It is about the same thickness as one of those silicone, rubber bracelet things, and is super comfortable, even to sleep in. It is water resistant, so you can wear it in the shower with no problems. The only time I took it off in the past week was when we went swimming at my uncle’s house.
photo(162)

It syncs with your smartphone or computer and tracks your steps, distance, calories burned, how well you’re sleeping and even what you eat and drink. You can also add friends who also have FitBit products and compete against them to see who can get the most steps in a week. Yes, I am a nerd and I love stuff like this!

photo(1)

In the short time that I’ve had it, I feel that the FitBit has opened my eyes about a few things. For one, even though I work out almost on a daily basis, I am very sedentary for most of the day, especially at work. Our office is pretty small and once I get up from my desk, I tend to multitask. I will put something in the copy machine, go to the bathroom and refill my Camelbak all in one trip to save time, but this also cuts down on my time spend moving. Don’t tell my boss, but I’ve been making a conscious effort to move around more, and quite honestly I am a fast walker

so I spend about the same amount of time but with double or triple the steps.

Everywhere you turn you hear the catchphrase that sitting is the new smoking and studies have found that prolonged sitting increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and also slows metabolism, even if you work out! While to some the FitBit may seem like another silly device to tinker with, but I think it is a great way to motivate yourself to move more and in turn, be healthier.

If you have a FitBit I’d love to be friends! Leave your email in the comments and we can be BFFs. 🙂

Do you use any devices to track steps, food, weight, etc.? Which ones?

On Saturday, Tommy surprised me with dinner at Penthouse 808 in Long Island City. The restaurant is located on the roof of the Ravel Hotel and has a gorgeous view of the 59th Street Bridge and Manhattan. Our reservation was for 6:45, perfect timing to enjoy the sunset over dinner. Even though the restaurant is on the roof, it is open year round. There is a retractable glass bubble, for lack of a better word, which they close up when it’s too cold to dine al fresco.

We started dinner with drinks. I definitely needed a drink after two days of studying. The Wasabi Margarita caught my eye right away. The margarita itself wasn’t spicy, but the glass was rimmed in sweetened wasabi which did had a bit of a kick.

We were pretty hungry going into dinner since we had only eaten breakfast that morning, so we started with some appetizers. Being a huge fan of tuna, Tommy immediately suggested the Tuna Tartare Tacos. This was probably the most interesting presentation of Tuna Tartare that I’ve ever seen. The tuna was served in a crispy shell

and topped with Wasabi Guacamole.

We also ordered the Korean Style Chicken Wings. I had read in multiple reviews that the wings were great and I since couldn’t remember the last time I had wings, it struck a major craving. The wings were spicy, but not too spicy and hit the spot. The chili flakes on them make the eating process a little messy, but wings are always messy.

We also split a sushi roll – the Smoke Stacks. Spiced tuna, avocado, kani and oshinko in marbled seaweed topped with tobiko.

Finally, for my entree I went with the Pan Roasted Chicken Breast which was marinated in Sake Teriyaki and served with a side of Chinese broccoli and pineapple fried rice. I don’t usually order chicken when we go out to eat, and I was this.close to getting the salmon, but the pineapple fried rice caught my eye and I couldn’t say no. The chicken was very moist and the teriyaki gave it a great flavor. The rice didn’t disappoint either!

Tommy went with the Soba Noodle Stir Fry with chicken.

Overall, we had a great dining experience. The food was very good, the service was decent and the views were amazing. I definitely recommend it!

A few weeks ago, this pretty little box appeared at my door step. I love all the inspirational words on the box – you know there has to be good stuff inside a box like this.

kona kase

Kona Kase is a monthly subscription service, and each month you get a box that filled to the brim with endurance nutrition samples. I love these types of subscription boxes because I get to try so many new products that I normally wouldn’t think to purchase. The case costs $15 a month and you can cancel at any time. They’re also a great gift, especially if you sign someone up for a longer subscription.

kona kase

My box came with:

Each box comes with a card explaining what each item is. Many items also have a discount code if you want to purchase more, which is pretty sweet. There’s also a spot to grade each item, so you don’t forget which things you really liked.

kona kase

My box also came with this really great quote. It really resonated with me and I feel like it can apply to almost anything in our lives, not just fitness.

The best part is that the great people at Kona Kase set up a special coupon code for my readers. Just enter frolicthroughlife at checkout and get 50% off your first Kona Kase.

Do you subscribe to any monthly subscription boxes?

I was provided a free Kona Kase for review. All opinion are my own.

Since Tommy and I started dating a bit over two years ago, he always jokes that I taught him to eat tons of different foods, like sushi (which he swore he hated when I suggested it for our first date) and Thai, and he taught me to eat jerky. I still remember the first time he bought jerky with me there. We were at the checkout in Target where he picked up a bag, and I said I don’t like jerky. I didn’t like jerky until we got to the car and he convinced me to try it, and so started my love affair with jerky. It was my snack of choice on the road, and a much better option than most gas station food.

When I was asked to try out a new gourmet line of Simply Snackin dried meat snacks, I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by. I received two bags of Simply Snackin, one beef and one chicken.

simply snackin

Simply Snackin is not your standard jerky. It combines traditional meats, with not so traditional add ins, to get flavors like Beef Sirloin with Cranberries and Blueberries and my personal favorite, Chicken Breast with Black Bean Salsa. I was a bit unsure of the fruit and meat combos at first, but they are soo good! The flavors range from savory, to a little sweet and spicy – something for everyone.

simply snackinEach snack is only 60 calories and they all pack between 8-11 grams of protein. Most of the varieties are gluten free and paleo friendly, which is a big plus for me! The best part about Simply Snackin is that it is a small, family run company, that believes in good food with no fillers or chemicals. Real food!

If you want to try some Simply Snackin yourself, head over to their website and use promo code SSjan2013 to get 10% off your purchase in the month of January.

Are you a jerky fan? What do you think of the fruit and meat combo?
