Just when it seemed like spring was here in NYC, winter decided to come back with a vengeance. So while we are stuck in the house with subzero temps I though I’d share some tips about how we keep our home cozy as we patiently wait for spring to arrive.

  1. Picture frames. There is nothing I love more than a house filled with pictures of family and friends. It just makes me happy to look at pictures of good times when I’m curled up on the couch. We have a big gallery wall in our living room full of pictures of family and friends and I love having everyone up on the wall to see on a daily basis.
  2. Pillows and cozy throws. We have more pillows and blankets than I would like to admit at our house, but we are all (including Alex) pillow and blanket people. There is nothing better than snuggling on the couch with your favorite people to watch a movie with a cozy blanket. Out of all our pillows and throws, my favs are the personalized ones from Shutterfly. Because whats better than a cozy blanket covered in pictures of your favorite people in the world?
  3. Oils, Oils, Oils. Our oil diffuser is always on and makes the house smell delicious and cozy. My favorite blends are Citrus Fresh, Joy and Christmas Spirit. We also diffuse Thieves during the colder months to kill germs and keep us healthy. I prefer oils over scented candles because they make your home smell awesome, without the potential health risks that candles may pose.
  4. Plants. There is something about plants that just make a home feel warm and cozy. I have a particular soft spot for succulents. I will also share a pro tip – if you can’t seem to keep your plants alive, Michael’s has a ton of beautiful fake plants that look very real. I bought a few of them a few weeks ago and even tricked Tommy into thinking they are real.
  5. Sunlight. Natural light in the house is priceless. We are lucky enough to have big windows that give us a ton of light in our bedroom and living room. I always tell Tommy that if we found our dream home, but it didn’t have enough natural light that it would be a tough sell. We have sheers hanging in all of our windows. They provide the privacy we need, while still letting in all of the amazing natural light.

What are your favorite ways to keep your home cozy?

Alex has been a fantastic sleeper since he was a baby, but a few weeks ago he started waking up multiple times throughout the night saying he was having nightmares. We tried a whole bunch of things – nightlights, showing him that certain things that were scaring him were fake, but nothing seemed to help. Out of desperation for a full night’s sleep, I decided to turn to oils and see if they would help. After some searching and asking for advice, I put together this blend and I kid you not, we have been sleeping quite well ever since.

In a glass roller ball, I combined 10 drops each of Purification, Lavender, Thieves and Stress Away oils. I filled the rest of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I picked Purification because it is the one that came up consistently when I asked about nightmares, Lavender and Stress Away because they promote relaxation and sleep and Thieves because it boosts immunity and a healthy kid is a well-sleeping kid.

I applied the oil to the bottoms of Alex’s feet and behind his ears. I also told him that these oils were a special combination to keep the nightmares away from him. That night, he slept great with no nightmares. Since that night, the oils have become part of our night time routine and if I forget to put them on him, Alex is sure to remind me.

Since we started using them, we have all been sleeping much better. While Alex will still have a bad dream occasionally, it is nothing compared to the few weeks of nightly waking we experienced. If your little ones are having issues sleeping, I highly recommend this blend!

  1. Torrid Jeggings. I have been searching for the perfect affordable tall jeans and I have found them! These are the best jeans if you are tall and curvy. They come in tall and extra tall sizes and break in to be the softest and most comfortable pair of jeans that you have in your closet. While they are called jeggings, they are more of a denim material than a legging one and have a real zipper and buttons. They come in tons of colors, washes and styles and are just PERFECT!
  2. Beautycounter Nourishing Night Cream. I had heard all the hype surrounding the Beautycounter for Target collection and decided to give their night cream a try. I have been loyal to my First Aid Beauty cream for a long time, but I really liked this one for nighttime. It soaks into the skin quickly and doesn’t leave your face feeling greasy. I will definitely be repurchasing this one!
  3. Mrs. Meyer’s Apple Cider Multi-Surface Spray. Someone I follow on Snapchat shared this and said that it smells amazing and makes the whole house smell like fall. I bought one bottle to try it out and went back the next week and bought two more, the dish soap and the hand soap. If you are a fan of fall scents, you need this is your life. I use it daily to clean the kitchen counters and it makes the whole house smell amazing. It is limited edition for fall, so if you find it get it because it might not be there for long!
  4. Anastasia Contour Kit. I have the light to medium version of this palette. This kit comes with three bronzers and three highlighters and can be used to for simple every day looks and to really contour your face for special occasions. I use the banana powder on top of my under eye concealer and the the middle bronzer everyday. I really like that it gives you a good variety all in one little palette and it is super easy for travel.
  5. Young Living Oils Christmas Spirit. I know, you are probably thinking what my husband did when he saw me diffusing this oil – Christmas already?! But seriously, this oil is a blend of orange, cinnamon and spruce oils and just smells like fall to me. It is one of those scents that make you happy and make the whole house feel cozy.
  6. Fresh Wave Odor Removing Spray. I received this spray for review after attending Blogger Bash and it has been a go to at our house since the summer. We don’t use the fake smelling air fresheners that are full of weird chemicals that you don’t want to be inhaling in the first place. Fresh Wave is made from essential oils and just a few sprays kills any odors left behind from cooking or taking out some extra smelly trash. We also have the Odor Removing Packs that work great in Alex’s sports bags. No more sweaty smells!
  7. Kady Lace Up Flats. These are the cutest, most comfortable flats ever. I get tons of compliments every time I wear them and they go with everything from leggings, so jeans to dress pants. I have the brown ones, but they come in a bunch of different colors too!
  8. La Croix Sparkling Water. I drink seltzer like it’s going out of style and the grapefruit La Croix is the best flavor out there! I also like to call in pamplemousse (grapefruit in French) and feel fancy.

What are your recent obsessions?

A few months ago, I received a sample of a coffee body scrub is my Ipsy bag and proceeded to fall in love with it and the way it made my skin feel. When I went online to purchase a full size, I was a a little surprised by the price. I mean, all coffee scrubs are, are a bunch of things you already have at home, mixed together and put into a cute package.

I decided to give it a shot and make my own scrub at home. Worst case scenario is I throw away the one I make and give into purchasing one online. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome and so my Coffee Brown Sugar Body Scrub was born! There are some beauty products that I do not bat an eye at dropping money on, but when something is this simple to make at home with household items, it is not worth the price tag!

Coffee Brown Sugar Scrub

Coffee Brown Sugar Scrub

Ingredients
  • 1 cup ground coffee
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Mix until all ingredients are incorporated into a thick paste.
  3. Spoon mixture into a small jar or other airtight container.

The scrub is a great exfoliant and leaves my skin feeling baby soft. I personally love the smell of coffee (and all things coffee in general) but if you don’t you can add in essential oils to mask the coffee smell a bit.

And a word of caution – this stuff makes a mess in your shower. Its nothing too terrible, but you will have to spend a few minutes to get all the coffee grounds to go down the drain. Totally worth it though!

Have you ever made your own coffee brown sugar body scrub? Do you like using more natural beauty products?

Happy April! Time is flying by so quickly. Even though it may not feel like Spring in NYC (it’s going to be in the 20s tonight!!), hopefully the warm weather and sunshine will be returning soon! march favs

My list of March favorites is a bit random, but they are all things that I have been obsessed with all month.

  1. Conair Curl Secret. I have been wanting to try one of these for a looong time and it just so happened that it was on sale, I had a gift card and ended up only paying $16 out of pocket for it. That being said it is worth every penny of its retail price because it gives me the nicest curls that last forever. I can curl my hair one day, not put in any product and still have waves in it for the next day, which is unheard of with my pin straight hair.
  2. Young Living Oils Citrus Fresh. If you want your house to smell like you just cleaned for hours, diffuse Citrus Fresh. It is a blend of orange, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, and mandarin oils with a hint of spearmint and it makes everything smell fresh and clean and it just makes you smile when you walk into the room.
  3. FitBit Blaze. This is kind of a cheat March favorite because I only got my FitBit during the last week of March. But that being said, it has not left my wrist for more than the time that it needs to charge since it arrived and I am obsessed with it and with meeting my goals, each and every single day. I’m going strong so far!
  4. Aladdin Milk Bottle. I bought this bottle with thoughts of it being my take along water bottle, but since it does not fit into the cup holders in my car (total bummer) it has become my at home bottle. It is a 30 oz bottle and I try to drink at least 3 of these bad boys each day on top of the water I drink at work from a smaller, cup holder friendly bottle.
  5. Black & White Sneakers. The Adidas pair shown above were a find at Century 21 for under $40, but I also have another pair of black and white Nike Theas that I am obsessed with. Other than work and more formal events, you can find me rocking one of these pairs of sneakers every day. As someone who has not worn a pair of sneakers with a casual, non-workout outfit in years, this is a big change for me and I am loving it!
  6. Smith’s Minted Rose Lip Balm. After battling a nasty cold in March, I had chapped lips that I could not get rid of. I used this lip balm religiously for a few days and I was chapped no more. I love the cooling effect it has on your lips.
  7. Cracklin’ Chicken. This is not something I can add to my little collage, but Nom Nom Paleo’s Cracklin’ Chicken has become a staple in our  dinnertime rotation. It is super easy to make aside from the splatter, but tastes so amazingly, flippin good. Seriously, try it. You will love this!

Since Alex was a baby, he suffered from eczema and dry skin in general. One of our favorite ways to combat his dry skin are moisturizing bath bombs at bath time, but the prices at specialty shops are pretty steep. I decided to give making my own bath bombs a shot and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to make and how soft they leave your skin.
Lavender bath bombs

If you can make a box cake mix, you can make bath bombs, as long as you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty.

Lavender bath bombs

DIY Lavender Bath Bombs

In a large glass bowl, combine all the ingredients using your hands to mix them together. When it is ready, the mixture should have the consistency of wet sand. Transfer the mixture to your silicone mold or wrap handful sized scoops in saran wrap. Let them sit for 24 hours until they harden and remove from the molds.

Lavender bath bombs

Drop them in the bath tub and watch them fizzle away. The coconut oil leaves your skin super smooth and the lavender is perfect to help you (or the kiddos) relax and unwind before bed time. Store them in a cool, dry place. These are a little softer than store bought bath bombs, so I do not recommend keeping them in the bathroom where it gets humid often.

Lavender bath bombs

If you are looking for any of ingredients that you need to make your own beauty products at home, I highly recommend using iHerb. The website has a huge selection of natural products, their prices are great and the shipping is super quick. I use them to order natural beauty products and all of the little man’s vitamins on a regular basis.

Do you use bath bombs? What are your favorite scents?
