I love decorating the house for different holidays. I can spend hours in Homegoods or Michael’s going through the home decor sections, looking for the perfect little addition that will make the house a little more cozy and festive. What I don’t love is red and hot pink plastic garland wreaths which start popping up in all the stores around Valentine’s Day. I prefer a muted palette and more understated decor, which is why I decided to make my own wreath for our front door.
diy valentines day wreath

The whole project from start to finish took me less than two hours. The most tedious part is the wrapping, but once you get the hang of it, it is easy, just time consuming. I did most of the wrapping in front of the TV while watching Two Broke Girls, so it wasn’t all that bad.

To make this wreath you will need:

  • 1 Styrofoam Wreath Form (I used an 8 inch one)
  • Jute (I found little rolls (25 yards) in the clearance section and used about 2 1/2 )
  • Hot glue gun
  • Artificial flowers or anything else you would like the embellish with

wreath 1

To start, I taped down one end of the jute to the wreath and just started wrapping. When I came to the end of my roll, I tied a little knot with the end to the start of the new roll and kept going. I tried to make sure that the little knots were toward the back so they didn’t take away from the look of the wreath.

Once the whole wreath was wrapped, I hot glued the end and moved on to the fun part, the decorations.

My biggest piece of advice is to space everything out before gluing. I tried a few different combos before I found the one I liked best. Once I was happy with the way it looked, I started gluing.

I am really happy with the way the wreath turned out, especially the color scheme of it. I was thinking that I could remove the hearts after Valentine’s Day and re-purpose it into a spring/Easter wreath.

What do you think? Do you enjoy DIY projects?

As much as snow can be a huge pain in the butt in NYC, I love a snow day. On Tuesday, Alex had early dismissal so we headed home around noon, before the snow really started to come down. I am super thankful for the early dismissal because later that day, I read Facebook status after status saying that commutes that usually take 30 minutes took over 3 hours. Later that afternoon, I got a call that the decision had been made and we were having a snow day.

We spent the two days out in the snow. We had snowball fights, made snow angels and sledded with other kids on our block.

We did some crafting. We made toilet paper roll monsters.

We ate some good stuff.

I’m really not looking forward to driving tomorrow because the temps are super low, ice is everywhere and this snow isn’t going anywhere for a while. Either way, these two days were soo worth it!

Did you get any snow where you live? What are your favorite snow day activities?

Since our pumpkin picking trip was a huge success, it’s only natural that I turn some of those pumpkins into cute Halloween crafts.

BOOM! How cute and silly are these guys?

When I first saw this idea in Rachael Ray’s Everyday magazine, I figured that it would be time-consuming and messy, but that was soo far from the case.

We made sure to put down a tarp to keep our sidewalk from getting painted and got to work. We used just the cheapo, Home Depot store brand spray paint, and it worked great.

I enlisted the help of Tommy to do the painting. We used quick, short sprays to cover the pumpkins, making sure not to overspray and leave drip marks. Even though the paint cans said that it should be dry withing 15 minutes, we waited overnight. The next day I flipped the pumpkins and painted their butts.

I left them to dry for about an hour to dry before flipping them back over, and painting on the eyes. This is probably the only part that I regret joining cheapo on. I opted to buy acrylic craft paint and a plain old paintbrush, but it would’ve worked better if I spent the extra three bucks and bought a paint pen. Live and learn.

Anyway, I drew on the outlines of the eyes with a pen and filled it

in with the paint. I drew on the irises and fixed the outlines with a black sharpie and viola!

Do you decorate for Halloween?

Why is it Monday already? The weekends always fly by so quick when you’re having a good time. Amirite?! And a good time I did most certainly have this weekend.

We started off Friday with a trip to the dentist. Luckily, it wasn’t me who was going into the dreaded dentist chair, but Munchkin. I really love his dentist, the whole office is strictly for kids and the waiting room is covered in toys and all the rooms have a different fun theme. Not to mention every kiddo gets a balloon when they leave.

I am happy to report that Munchkin has perfect teeth and was a champ during the exam. No tears for this little man!

Friday night Tommy and I went out for sushi! We went to our new usual Sushi Village and the place was packed, as usual. The sushi was delicious, as usual.

On Saturday, we lazed around the house for a very long time. We finally decided to get out of the house and headed to Target. I scored some really great deals from their bodega section. I got an 18 pack of Cliff Z Bars for under $7 and a huge variety box of Annie’s Bunnies for under $6. I also picked up some stuff for Tommy’s Valentine’s Day gift.

On Saturday night, we headed out to the island to visit

the best baby girl in the world! Tommy’s goddaughter is now walking and I had a blast playing with her. Munchkin also had a blast playing with all her toys. It’s funny how a change of scenery and toys can keep a child occupied for hours.

We woke up pretty early on Sunday with the idea of getting bagels for breakfast. But not just any bagel would do, so we headed out to Astoria to Brooklyn Bagel. Since the last time we were there I took the sweet route, I figured this time I would go savory. I got a toasted whole wheat everything bagel with scallion bacon cream cheese. It was pretty amazing and I can’t wait to go back there.

After breakfast we hit up the mall. I wanted to get my eyebrows done and Tommy wanted to check out some new spectacles. When I got to the Benefit brow bar, I was told that they didn’t have anyone on Sundays that does eyebrow so I tried out the new threading booth that opened not too long ago. It was my first time threading and I probably won’t be back to the brow bar for a long time. Not only was it half the price, the lady gave me a punch card so when I get my brows done 5 times, the 6th is free! That’s a winner in my book.

While we were out and about, I got a call from my mom telling us not to eat because she had bought steak and was going to make it for dinner. When we got home, I prepped the steaks and made some sides.

Dinner was so yummy – steak with brown rice, spinach and asparagus. Can’t go wrong!

After din din, I got down to some homework. I have an assignment due on Thursday in which I have to revise a really bad contract and I have to say its pretty killer. I went through the contract a ton of times trying to make sense of it, but it’s written in such archaic legal terms that it’s difficult to understand. One I got a first draft of the contract down, I turned my interest to a certain gift that I am making for a certain day of Valentine.

I can’t say much about this gift, but I am having a lot of fun making it. I can’t wait to share later this week!

That’s all for now my friends, I need to run. Work is calling my name.

What did you do this weekend? Are you a gift buyer or a gift maker?

Yesterday, I tried to do something almost impossible, get a good picture of Munchkin for our Christmas card. Don’t get me wrong, Munchkin is an incredibly photogenic baby, but I can never seem to get a good picture of him when I actually need it. I guess he will never be a model because when someone tries to make him pose, the results aren’t so great, as seen below. Or maybe he just needs a better photographer.

I eventually gave up on taking a good picture and put Munchkin down for his nap and that is when this happened.

I saw a picture of a little baby sleeping with Christmas light next to him on Pinterest and figured it’s worth a shot, and you don’t know how glad I am. After editing the picture a bit, I was in love.

I ordered the cards from SimplyToImpress.com if anyone is wondering. I bought a voucher from Living Social for $15 a few weeks ago that gave

Had get price a peony cialis for daily use product ended regular canadian pharmacy online give what set http://www.edtabsonline24h.com/cialis-vs-viagra.php to highly. Those flat previously: online prescription free pharmacy saturate currently porch, the blue pill life SoftSheen-Carson sexy upset online pharmacy sheilding very others ed medications doesn’t have dyed!

me $40 to spend on the cards.

Since we were busy playing photographer, we ordered pizza for dinner. I got a veggie slice from my favorite pizzeria in the world, Rosa’s. I may be biased because this is basically the only place I’ve gone for pizza regularly in my life, but the pizza is amazing.

Today I am heading to the supermarket and to Michael’s to pick up the supplies I need to make my cookies for the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap! I’m still deciding between two recipes that I want to make. I also need to find some cute containers to ship them in at Michael’s. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I’m gonna keep it a bit of a secret until I post about the cookies.

My belly is rumbling, so I think it’s time for breakfast!

Cheers to the freakin’ weekend! 😉

Do you make your holiday cards or buy them? What are your plans for the weekend?

I apologize for my absence, but I’ve been a busy bee this weekend.  Let’s go straight to the good stuff.

On Friday, Tommy and I celebrated our one year anniversary.  Tommy surprised me by taking the day off from work so that we could spend the whole day together.  Since he was being creative planning our day, I decided to get crafty and make him a gift.  I love scrapbooking and making little books to capture memories, so I made him a photo book titles 10 reasons I love you.  We’re not really the mushy, romantic types, so the book was made with some humor, meaning I chose funny pictures with silly captions.

Tommy also wanted a throw blanket for his couch, so I found an incredibly soft and cozy blanket at Target.  I thought just giving him the blanket was a little plain, so I sewed a patch onto it from felt with our anniversary date on it.

When Tommy came over on Friday morning, he brought me gorgeous roses and we exchanged cards.  We definitely run on the same brain waves, because we ended up getting each other the same card. The cards had the same writing, but had different pictures because we bought them from different stores.

We started off with some lunch in the city. We headed downtown to the famous Katz’s Deli, which you may know from When Harry Met Sally. We both got Pastrami Sanwiches on rye with mustard. This was the best pastrami I’ve ever tried, hands down.  They also make their own roast beef and turkey, which looked amazing also.

After we filled our bellies, we headed up to Times Square to let Munchkin have some fun.  First we ran into Elmo, Cookie Monster and other cartoon characters.  He was so excited to meet Elmo, but when we wanted to take a picture of him with the characters, he got scared that we were leaving him and doesn’t look to excited.

After that, we headed over to Toys R Us Times Square to ride the Ferris Wheel and window shop.  Alex loved and hated the Ferris wheel at the same time, once it started moving he liked it, but the starts and stops scared him a bit.  We were very excited because we got to sit in the cart that we wanted – Mega Bloks!

We also walked around and took in the sights of the Toy Store.  They have an amazing lego section where they have famous NYC buildings made out of hundreds of thousands of Legos. They also have a huuuge life like T Rex that roars and moves around. They also have a huge candy section, which I enjoyed very much.

After getting our toy fix, we headed over to Crumbs Cupcakes to get some sweets. I got the red velvet and Tommy got the candy bar cupcake. We both shared with Munchkin who was one happy camper.  We walked over to Bryant Park to enjoy our cupcakes and let Munchkin run around for a bit.

We visited a few more stores before heading home to nap before dinner. Let me tell you, that blankie is soo comfy and I did hog it the whole evening. Dinner was sushi, a shocker, I know. We love our sushi.  We went to Sushi Village in Bayside and had some really yummy sushi.  The place was packed all night, so you know the sushi has to be good.

We were going to go to the Empire State Building at night to take in the views of the city, but we were too tired. Tommy asked me to be his girlfriend last year on the top of Rockefeller Center while we were taking in views of the city, and we kind of wanted to relive it this year. Instead we grabbed a movie from Redbox, snuggled in bed and enjoyed the evening.  I fell asleep 20 minute into the movie as usual.

Since this post is already super long, I’ll save the rest of the weekend for tomorrow.

*********************

This morning I woke up and made myself a yummy egg scramble.  I got the chance to try some Eggstraordinary Eggs thanks to Land O Lakes and the Foodbuzz Taste Maker Program.

Even though the eggs are a little pricier than their supermarket brethren, they come from hens who are fed an all natural, all vegetable diet of whole grains, corn and soy. The eggs are also brown, which I love.  When my parents first came to the U.S., they were confused by white eggs, because all the chickens on their farms in Poland only laid brown eggs. You can really taste the difference in the eggs.

Have a great Monday everyone!

What did you do this weekend? How do you like your eggs?

I’ve been a bad blogger this week, but I’ve got a good excuse, I promise. This Saturday is my and Tommy’s one year anniversary. Tommy took the day off on Friday and has planned a whole day for us to spend together, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve too, which is why I’ve been a little MIA from the blog. I don’t want to give away anything that I am doing because Tommy reads my blog, but I will post it on Friday if any of you are

interested.

All I will say that I spent way too much time in Michael’s yesterday and I’m pretty sure I smell like the potpourri the store always smells like. I also hit up Target where I got suckered into making my first holiday purchases
. In my own defense, the gingerbread house kit was on sale.

Like last Wednesday. I came home to a yummy dinner waiting for me made by my lovely boyfriend. He made whole wheat penne with grilled chicken in vodka sauce with a side of zucchini. The boy has major cooking skills, the chicken was perfectly moist and yummy. The secret is in the marinade. First he marinated it overnight in Italian dressing and instead of spilling out the marinade and cooking the chicken, he had the chicken stew in the marinade until almost fully cooked, before transferring it to a skillet to give it some color.

Tommy also made up Dirty Hos to go with dinner. Get your mind out of the gutter, Dirty Hos are Hoegaarden beer and Framboise Lambic, a French raspberry beer, mixed together. The drink tastes like a fruity, raspberry beer which I love. Next time you’re at a bar, order a Dirty Ho, not only will you get a great drink, you’ll get some funny looks from the people around you guaranteed.

The Thankful November list continues!

L is for Love. Everyone wants to love and be loved and I can say that I am a very lucky girl because I have the love of not only my family, but great friends and an amazing boyfriend. I also have the love of a little man which is like no other.

M is for Music. Music is something that can transform your mood and bring you back to a different place in time. I have tons of songs on my iPod and when I put it on shuffle and a song I haven’t listened to in a while comes on, it can bring back so many memories. There are few things in life that can bring you back to a point in time like music.

I’m back to my workshop becuase I’ve got less than 24 hours to finish my surprises. Have a great Thursday!

When do you start the holidays in your house? What’s your favorite drink?
