On Saturday night, we did the Color Run Night in Brooklyn. The Color Run Night is a lot like its daytime counterpart, but it takes place at night and all of the colors glow under black-lights that are set up all over the course.

We got to Aviator Sports around 8:45 pm and put on all of our glow gear. It was a lot of fun to get all decked out in glow sticks and it also helped us spot each other along the course when we got separated.

color run nightAround 9:15 we made our way to the start line for the Run/Walk/Dance/Cartwheel/Party Wave. While we waiting for our turn to start, there was lots of music and announcers throwing out t-shirts and other Color Run Night merchandise into the crowd.

I loved the disco ball at the start which gave everything a but of extra sparkle.

With around 5,000 participants, the course was pretty crowded. For the most part, there were lights set up so you could see where you were going, but the road at Aviator Sports Complex isn’t the straightest and we did see a few people fall down and need medical attention.

There were five color stations, a bubble station and a headlamp area. The color stations were just like the ones they have at the regular color runs with volunteers spraying you with the colored powder, but they all had black lights set up so everything and everyone was glowing.

The headlamp section was a bunch of black lights set up with different phrases stenciled onto the ground in reflective paint. A lot of people took a break there to take some fun pictures with the phrases.

The bubble station was really cool looking. They had a few bubble machines set up and the black lights made all the bubbles glow as the flew through the air.

At the finish line they handed out packets of glow dust to throw. There was also a DJ playing music and doing count downs for everyone to throw their powder into the air, which looked really cool.

Overall, we had a great time. It was Alex’s first 5k and he was already asking me this morning if we can go another Color Run next weekend. The Color Run definitely is not a competitive race where you will get your next PR, but it is a ton of fun to do with family and friends.

Coming off of two Spartan Races, Running Dirty was completely different. I don’t know if it was bad timing, since it was the weekend before classes started for most colleges in the area, but there were not that many people at the event at all. We were in the 9:30 wave and there was probably 75 people who started with us, and Tommy said that the numbers only went down after us, which is sad since the race was a lot of fun.

The course was well marked with tape showing you where you needed to go and name signs for each obstacle. The major difference that I noticed between Running Dirty and my previous mud runs was ironically, the amount of mud. This was my far the muddiest race I’ve done, and the mud just kept coming. It was difficult to walk quickly, let alone, run in some spots because you would just sink into the trails. The obstacles were not taken as seriously than in other races. There weren’t volunteers at each obstacle to make sure you did it, and no one really cared if you just breezed through them. The obstacles, with a few exceptions, were also much easier than the previous races I have done.
photo(29)
Of the obstacles I can remember, there was a walk climb, a few under and over walls, two barbed wire mud crawls and one sand barbed wire crawl. There were two swims and there were other obstacles in the water, like the balance beam.
photo(27)
There were also two pipes we had to shimmy across, monkey bars, drunk monkey bars which went down and back up, a huge platform we had to run across, a cargo net climb and a crawl through muddy water under a net.
photo(33)
Overall, we had a blast. While the race wasn’t extremely physically demanding, it was a great time, especially since I had a whole group of friends to run it with. I think that Running Dirty would make a great first mud run/obstacle course race for someone who is interested in trying these types of races, but a little scared to do something more difficult like a Spartan or Tough Mudder.

Have you ever done a mud run/obstacle course race? Which obstacle would you want to try?

On June 2, I completed my first Spartan Race and finally understood what all the hype is about. If you are a runner, you have probably noticed the influx of non-traditional races, like obstacle course races, color runs, mud runs, etc. If you haven’t run an obstacle course race yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for! The Spartan Race is a true test of fitness and endurance, and

The race was a 4 mile Spartan Sprint that took place in Tuxedo, NY.

It is difficult to recap the race because I honestly cannot remember most of it. I don’t know if it was the adrenaline of being in the moment and trying to push through the events or what, but there are simply parts that I don’t recall. I couldn’t tell you what all my obstacles were and I couldn’t tell you how much time it took us (we finished in 2:50:36, but at the time we had no clue if two hours of

ten hours had passed.) I can tell you that a Spartan is a life changing type of race. Their slogan is when you cross the finish line you’ll know, and it is true. When Mikey and I crossed the finished line we were ecstatic.

The day after the race, I sat down to film a video about my experience, so I wouldn’t forget all of the things I wanted to share. If you want to see why you need to run a Spartan Race, watch away!

And last, but not least, some pictures from the race itself. Whenever we came down the mountain to do obstacles, Tommy was there to catch the good, the bad and the burpees!

So long story short, I am hooked on Spartan! My next Spartan is one month, July 14th, Blue Mountain , Pennsylvania. I’m counting down the days!

Have you even done a Spartan Race? Have I convinced you to do one?! 😉

I received free entry to the race and training gear from Reebok. All opinions are my own!

Last Thursday, instead of dressing in my stuffy office clothes and heading off to work, I had the opportunity to roll around in the run in Times Square. Let me explain…

My morning started off with a press conference to kick off Reebok’s new partnership with the Spartan Race with some fellow Fitfluential Ambassadors – Christine, Noelle, Ashley, Ava, Megan, Alfonso, Andre, Meghan

I’ve heard a lot about different obstacle/mud runs in the last few months, but the Spartan Race really blows all of the other races out of the water. The Spartan Race really tests your fitness and if you aren’t able to complete an obstacle, the penalty is 30 burpees…yikes! The Spartan Race has grown exponentially, starting with 1,500 participants in its first year up in Vermont, to over 1.5 million people competing in 60 events worldwide in 2012. Not too shabby for an event that the creators were told that no one would show up to!

IMG_2950

This new partnership between Reebok and the Spartan Race will allow for the race to expand even further. The creators of the race have an Olympic dream and want obstacle course racing to be an event in the Olympic games. Something that I would totally watch! Through this partnership, the Spartan Race hopes to bring obstacle racing to new markets around the world and expose people who would otherwise never know that these types of races exist. Reebok is also creating a new line of Spartan Race gear including clothes and shoes, which I am very excited to see! The Spartan Race is also 80% done with building a training course in Vermont, just six miles outside of Killington. I know that I will be visiting this once it opens!

The real fun began when we headed outdoors. There was a 10 obstacle course set up in the heart of Times Square, which was a preview of  the real thing which is taking place in Citi Field in April. The course was not easy! I was hesitant at first, and did not want to roll through the mud, but I figured that I had a change of clothes and when would I ever have the chance to roll in the mud in the middle of Times Square, right?

photo(88)

Another amazing thing about the Spartan Race is the sense of community. It really reminded me of Crossfit. I knew I wouldn’t be able to climb the rope, and was ready to give up and do the burpees when two people on the course ran over and propped me up. I rang the bell on top of the rope and felt so proud! Everyone who completed the course got sent home with some bling, which I proudly wore!

Tired and muddy, but smiling!

I was honored to be able to compete alongside incredible athletes and amazing people, like the wounded veterans who compete with Team Extreme. Seeing Todd Love, a triple amputee, climb the rope on his own, threw every excuse in the book out the window.

I cannot wait to complete the real thing in April in Citi Field, but until then I need to train or else my butt with be doing way too many burpees!

P.S. My feet made the official Reebok Spartan Race video..check out my fresh new kicks!

Have you ever done an obstacle run?
